Wales, 19th century. Farmers throughout the country are protesting against unfair taxations. These protests are known by the title ‘The Rebecca Riots’. The farmers with hairy legs, muscled arms and long beards dress themselves like women. They stop at every tax-house and perform a little role-play before they burn down the building.
Ruby’s father is born in Wales. That’s why she is fascinated with stories of this country. She researched British humour and how to combine this element with fashion. British humour is full of self-mockery and you can tell Ruby is not afraid to use this in her work. She is breaking the gap between artist and audience by making people laugh and making fashion appoachable.
Presented to you are eight daughters of Rebecca. Every daughter has her own personality and therefore her own taste in shape, textiles and colours. The silhouette of the Welsh national costume is a big influence in this collection. Ruby used different techniques for every look to approach this pyramid shape. She is fascinated by the different ways the materials behave around a moving body.

Rebecca and Her Daughters
Graduation Collection, Musis Arnhem, 2017
Ruby Russell is a Dutch fashion designer based in Antwerp. After graduating at ArtEZ, Arnhem, in 2017 she is now launching her design-studio. The graduation collection of Ruby symbolizes her position as a fashion designer. As she designed eight daughters she will continue creating new ones. Her mission is to create pieces, not collections. This makes it possible to put all effort in this single piece and produce it in a sustainable way. The main inspiration for her collections comes from her personal background combined with a certain point in history. During the design process layers of strange atmosphere’s, humoristic elements, diversity of materials and bright colours are added.
